Sometimes, because we don't want to be alone, we hide parts of ourselves so that others might like us more but that hiding hurts our "self-confidence." We can't always control our emotions, but there are things we can do to make ourselves feel better. These actions are called "coping." Use the activities from this lesson with students to brainstorm using their senses all the healthy things that can be done to cope with uncomfortable feelings and situations.

Emotional Triggers

A trigger is a person, place, situation, or thing (such as a memory) that causes an emotional response such as anger, frustration, joy, sadness, or shame. Knowing our triggers can help us better plan for choosing more healthy responses and we'll explore emotional triggers in this week's lesson.

Working Through Strong Emotions

Strong emotions can be hard to navigate, even for adults. Much like a storm, feelings can sometimes come quickly and we may get swept away with strong thoughts or sensations which can cause adverse consequences. In these elementary and secondary lessons, students will be guided through a visualization to help weather the "emotional storm."

EQ and Emotional Awareness

"EQ", also known as "emotional quotient," is about understanding our emotions and our ability to cope with difficult situations. The first step in growing our EQ is by first noticing and identifying our emotions. This week, we'll be working on this skill by reflecting on our emotions and learning other names for our feelings.

When presented with a problem or situation, we typically have multiple ways that we can choose how to respond. Once we take time to analyze the situation, we must choose to make a choice. Design Thinking: A Collaborative Form of Problem Solving

Problem solving can be challenging, especially when we try to do it alone. Sometimes our feelings get in the way and it makes problem solving even more difficult. When we have others supporting us, it often helps us to relieve our fears and frustrations to find many solutions. Design thinking is one way to work with others to solve problems.

Determine the Size of the Problem

Not all problems are equal and they come in different sizes. To solve a problem, it can be helpful to determine its size and ensure that our reaction to the problem fits with the size. This lesson walks you through how to determine the size the problem and provides a printed activity for older students.

Reactive vs. Reflective Thinking

Have you ever reacted to a situation or made a choice to do something that you later regretted? In this lesson, students will practice the skill of responsible decision-making by analyzing different situations and identifying the different choices we may have in our response.
